ServiceM8 vs Better Half: which is right for your trade?

ServiceM8 and Better Half get lumped together because both live on your phone and both promise to make running a trade less of a headache. But they’re built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one for your business wastes money. Here’s the honest comparison.

What ServiceM8 is built for

ServiceM8 is job-management software. It’s strong once a job is on the books: scheduling, quoting, invoicing, job cards, and a tidy paper trail that flows into Xero. If you’ve got an office, someone on a laptop, and a steady Xero workflow, it’s a capable system and a fair chunk of the industry runs on it.

Its phone-answering feature, the Phone Agent, is an add-on that sits on top of the higher phone plans. It’s iOS-only, the desktop is still the primary place the software expects you to work, and the answering piece is gated behind the more expensive tiers.

What Better Half is built for

Better Half starts at the call. It answers the phone you can’t get to, in your business name, in a natural Australian voice, works out what the caller needs and how urgent it is, captures the suburb and address, and books the job. On top of that it bundles your diary, quoting, invoicing and card payments into one app, one login, one bill. Tap to Pay is on Android now, with iPhone coming.

The key difference: ServiceM8 manages the jobs you’ve already won. Better Half wins the call first. The lead is the part that’s easiest to lose, because it’s gone the moment your phone rings out and the caller dials the next tradie.

Where they overlap

Both handle scheduling, quoting and invoicing. If all you need is to manage jobs you already have, that overlap is real and ServiceM8 does it well. The gap is the phone. A missed call never reaches your job-management software at all, no matter how good it is, because there’s no job to manage yet.

How to pick

Choose ServiceM8 if: you’ve got office admin, you’re comfortable working from a laptop, you live in Xero, and you’ve already got the phone covered. It’s built for a bigger, desk-based operation and it’s good at that.

Choose Better Half if: you’re a one to three person crew running the whole business from a phone, you miss calls because your hands are full, and you want answering, diary, quoting and payments in one place without stitching together a stack. It’s Android and iPhone, phone-first, with answering built in rather than bolted on.

We’d rather tell you straight than sign you up to the wrong thing. If you’re a desk business with staff, ServiceM8 may genuinely suit you better. If you’re the one on the tools and the phone keeps ringing out, that’s exactly the gap Better Half fills.
